Evidence from live checkouts, not a wall of stars

These notes come from teams who brought a payment-enabled app and a week when conversion tracking and the gateway’s own records disagreed. Names and roles are used with permission; app brands stay unnamed where the client asked.

Gateway conversion audit

The audit showed our ‘successful checkout’ event firing on authorisation, two steps before capture. We had been celebrating a number that the settlement file quietly contradicted every Friday.

Drop-off diagnosis

I asked for a drop-off diagnosis after we added DuitNow QR. The write-up named a ten-second hop we had treated as abandonment. I still wish the findings pack had arrived a day earlier — we had already rolled a guess into production — but the reconstruction itself was careful.

Payment funnel instrumentation

Instrumentation took longer than I hoped because we had three wallets and a card path. Once the events were named, our weekly review stopped arguing about which screen lost parents.

Launch-week tracking review

Launch-week review caught a store-review build that stripped the webhook secret. That would have been a silent first weekend. The working session was brisk, almost terse, which suited a release calendar.

A longer note: grocery delivery, authorisation counted as sale

Lina’s team had a weekly conversion figure that marketing presented as healthy and a Friday settlement that finance treated as a problem. The audit found checkout_success firing when the issuer approved, before capture, and before a subset of 3-D Secure returns. Two wallet paths had no timeout state, so unanswered hops were filed as quits.

The findings pack did not raise their authorisation rate. It stopped them adding the same event twice after a webhook retry, and it gave finance a join key that survived the weekend presentment delay. The work was ten days. The argument in the Monday meeting changed because the hops had names.

A longer note: DuitNow QR and a premature fix

Hafiz asked for a drop-off diagnosis after DuitNow QR went live on a ticketing app. The reconstruction showed a ten-second hop his team had already tried to “fix” by shortening a spinner. He would have preferred the pack a day earlier. The diagnosis still named the bank-side clock his spinner could not influence, which is why we keep that reservation on this page — the calendar of a live app does not pause for a careful write-up.
